Podgorica weather is classified as Mediterranean with strong Adriatic sub tropical influences. Situated only 50 km from the Adriatic Sea and juxtaposed between three rives and in close proximity to the Dinaric Alps, the capital of Montenegro enjoys hot, dry summers and cold winters.

Perhaps the most distinguished feature of Podgorica weather is its extremely hot summers. Temperature peaks during July and August often soaring over 40 °C. Even during the long, cold months of winter weather in Podgorica retains a somewhat mild disposition rarely dropping bellow 6 °C during January, the year’s coldest month. For around 135 days each year, temperature exceeds 25 °C while the median daily temperature is 16.4 °C. However during winter Podgorica weather is occasionally under the influence of strong northerly winds that drop temperatures a notch or two.

Summers are often a dry time in Podgorica; it’s not uncommon for a hundred days to pass without a single drop of rain. Late fall is characterized by longer rain periods, while spring’s predominantly fine weather is occasionally intercepted by rain showers. Overall, Podgorica enjoys around 120 days of rain per year, and about 60 days of strong winds.

Snow is something of a rare occasion for Montenegro’s capital city; it only snows for a few days per year and accumulation is almost insignificant.

More Information about Podgorica Weather

Podgorica weather is classified as Mediterranean, with extremely long, hot, dry summers and cold winters. Weather in Podgorica is largely modified by the city’s positioning just 50 km from the Adriatic Sea (a section of the Mediterranean), as well as its closeness to the Dinaric Alps to the north. Another factor with immense influence on the patterns of Podgorica weather is the valley over Skadar Lake and the nearby mountainous regions that characteristically give climate in the capital and largest city of  Montenegro a distinctively altered Mediterranean feel. Snow is almost an unheard occurrence in Podgorica.

Podgorica weather during the summer is exceedingly hot, with temperatures reaching highs of between 40 °C and 44.8 °C, July and August being the hottest months of the year. The close to100 days of the summer season can come and go without a single drop of rain falling over Podgorica. The average daily temperature for the year is around 16.4 C and over 260 without precipitation.

Weather in Podgorica during winter is influenced by an occasional strong northerly wind which affects the lowering of the apparent temperature by a few degrees. Podgorica weather during spring time and late autumn is characterized by excessive rainfall during both seasons; spring experiences rain showers whereas autumn has longer wet episodes.

Interestingly, for the purpose of determining where the border between the sub tropic and moderate zone lies, the best indicator is the olive tree. It can bear fruits exclusively in the places where the average January temperature is not lower than 6 Cº. Podgorica weather has temperatures that hover just one degree lower so the olive tree can not produce a quality fruit.

The average annual amount of precipitation is 1544mm, and the relative humidity of the air is 59. 6%. 115 days out of the year experience rainfall and 60 of those strong winds. In excess of 135 days per year the air temperature is above 25 Cº.
